Rusa Morchiladze – a composer who has thousands of songs to her credit, and it can be said that the biggest hits of Georgian show business belong to her. Her songs deserve public love. She wrote her first song “Yebi” at the age of 15, and since then her musical pen has not stopped… She is currently a member of the jury of “Sakharkotos Khma” together with Dato Porchkhidze and Giorgi Dzotsenidze. By the way, the soloist of “Ursa” recently wrote the song “Erti Gogo Shemikvarda”, the views of which have long exceeded a million…
You are a member of the jury of “Rustavi 2”, the new musical project “Sakharkotos Khma”. What were your first thoughts when you were offered membership in the jury?
Your first thoughts were that I did not want to agree. I have such a period that I do not perceive news with enthusiasm. I had to muster up the strength to take part in the project, because it requires a lot of responsibility, but then I thought that this is my job and decided to accept this offer. That’s how I ended up at “Voice of Georgia” and, by the way, I’m very happy, I have relationships with very good people, that’s the main thing, no other interests come before that.
What’s the most interesting thing about this project?
When I really like something and I spread my arms, those are happy moments… If I don’t like it…
You can tell by your facial expressions…
That’s not good (smiles).
Your facial expressions and raising your eyebrows have become a topic of discussion on the Internet…
I’ll tell you a story about raising your eyebrows. Director Kikala called me and said that he wanted to cast you in a film. I asked what I had to do and he said, I had to raise my eyebrows (laughs).
Raising an eyebrow is related to your harshness…
I don’t understand this and I don’t understand it. I think I have very soft assessments. When I realize that the participants are very young, they are in competition mode and their blood pressure is 160, you have to be very ruthless to assess them strictly. Everyone should imagine it for themselves. You appear in front of such a large audience and three ambushed guys listen to you, who you know for sure will not forgive you anything. Singing in such a mode is not easy, I understand this very well. Believe me, I am very restrained during assessments…
What tendency was evident during the castings of this music competition and afterwards? What is it that you cannot forgive when performing a Georgian song?
I cannot forgive men when they strive for a high register. They think that because they get a high sound, it’s good… No!.. By the way, Georgian men have this tendency to gravitate towards the upper register… I don’t like this and I don’t forgive it, I don’t like such singing, when they can’t feel the pulse anymore and can’t feel the song anymore. I also don’t forgive bad taste. They may give you a not-so-good song, but you can find the key and perform it well, they may give you a miracle song, but you won’t be able to do anything. Taste is the main thing, and also intelligence. A singer needs intelligence… Who needs just a voice and your good musical ear for what?!..
Despite the fact that your repertoire certainly does not lack superhits, “Tonight” – this is a composition from your repertoire, which is performed in every corner. When you were writing it, did you have a feeling that a big hit was being born, which would become so popular?
I wrote this song for Nino Chkheidze… I didn’t think about it during the writing process, it was a bit of a mukhambazuri, a bit of a city song. After the work process was finished and I played it for Nino, I told her that it would be a hit… At first she didn’t like it and said, I don’t think it’s for her. I convinced her, it’s very uplifting and will be a hit for you.
Did you have to convince another singer?
No, no one else has said such a thing. Now she often recalls this story. Nika Memanishvili arranged it for us…
You are the author of thousands of songs. Are they all archived?
I don’t have any archive, my Mariam Tskipurishvili recently made a catalog for me, but not all the songs were included, because some of them were recorded on a CD, in the form of demos…
You wrote your first song at the age of 15 – “Yebi”. It’s been 40 years since you’ve been a composer. What does this feel like? Are you going to celebrate this date?
I think my evening at the Philharmonic is already very late this year, but I think that such an evening will take place someday. I want a concert like no other, it requires all kinds of resources and time, work…
Do you think you have written the main song of your life?
Maybe yes, maybe no. I don’t know…
